Music while you look: The Big Boss Man himself, Sleepy LaBeef

Jerry Cavanaugh:
Drums, Harmonica, Vocals, Bass, Mandolin

Since his professional debut at age 13, Jerry Cavanaugh lives behind the drums, on a stage, knocking out the backbeat that drives some of the best performers in the business. I might add that he is one of the rarest of rare who routinely wails on his harmonicas while knocking out that beat. Yes, I said wailing on a harmonica and rockin’ on the drums, at the same time. Slammin'!!

(Levon Helm does it. Jerry Cavanaugh does it. Who else?)

It's a show within the show!

While still in his teens, Jerry recorded with Al Ferrier, "Rockabilly Hall of Fame" member and Louisiana Hayride original. (http://www.rockabillyhall.com/) Jerry played harmonica and drums for several Ferrier cuts, including Al Ferrier's European hit, "I'm A Rockabilly Man," recorded at J.D. Miller's Mastertrax Studio in Crowley, LA., recorded for the European market. Recently, Jerry joined the ever soulful Maria Muldaur and the great bassist Dave Pomeroy on Sleepy LaBeef’s CD release, “Tomorrow Never Comes.”

Jerry has played all over the USA and throughout Europe ...
A quick mention:
Jerry played Lincoln Center in New York several times with notable artists including: Sleepy LaBeef, Dale Hawkins, The 5 Blind Boys of Alabama, Grammy Award-winning blues harmonica master James Cotton, Roy Head, and Larry Johnson.
Just a few of the numerous outstanding performers Jerry has played shows with: Nathan and the Zydeco Cha Chas, Marcia Ball, Junior Brown, Rick Nielsen of Cheap Trick.
Recent:  Sonny Burgess and the Pacers, Wanda Jackson, Charlie Gracie, Hayden Thompson, Stan Perkins, Jason D. Williams, and Ace Cannon.

Jerry is a proud "Second Generation Rockabilly Hall of Fame" member:

Big thanks and appreciation to Bob Timmers for all his energy in producing and maintaining this fantastic site!
It's a Rockabilly landmark!

Since 1998, Jerry tours with the greatest of Rockabilly and American Root’s living legends, the big boss man himself, Sleepy LaBeef; famously known as the Road Warrior, the Human Jukebox, the Bull. Doesn’t get much better than that. Jerry has the honor of touring with Sleepy LaBeef, pumping out high octane, ‘Real-Deal’ American Roots music, in shows across the United States, Canada, and across Europe in Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and England.

Sleepy and the Band just kicked off their summer tour at the May 21, 2011, Arkansas Delta Rockabilly Festival in Helena, Arkansas!

LABOR DAY WEEKEND RECAP 9/5/06

EXCERPT

After purchasing CD's from Will Hawkins and Emily Zuzik, I headed a short distance to the Conemaugh Health System Stage to catch a little bit of Sleepy LaBeef's performance. A returning performer at Folkfest, Sleepy and his band performed roots country, honky-tonk and rockabilly, combining original numbers and favorites together into a rapidfire, nonstop mix. Among the songs Sleepy and band did while I watched were renditions of Bob Dylan's "Knockin' On Heaven's Door" (sung by drummer Jerry Cavanaugh while Sleepy himself sat in behind the drum kit), Englebert Humperdinck's "Please Release Me" into Lee Dorsey's "Workin' in The Coal Mine," the Righteous Brothers' "Unchained Melody," and Johnny Cash's "Folsom Prison Blues.

Sleepy LaBeef and his band.

. . . After watching Mark's set for a little while, I headed to the JWF Industries Stage to catch a more extended look at Sleepy LaBeef and his band. This longer look allowed me to experience more of Sleepy's nonstop, moving performance as he and his band fired off roots country and rock'n'roll, blues, gospel and more. A lot of Sleepy's repertoire was cover material, as he and his band did selections from Hank Williams, Chuck Berry, Fats Domino, blues standards like "I'm Tore Up," "Ain't Got No Home" and more. Sleepy and his group kept the music moving and nonstop, and he kept the mood jovial by talking about the early roots masters as he went along.

LaBeef treats crowd to rockabilly jam session

". . . Sleepy LaBeef turned his show at the Southgate House into an informal jam session.

There aren't many first-generation rockabilly performers left, and for years LaBeef has been as musically vital as any of his peers. LaBeef, an Arkansas native who turns 68 in July, is a touring machine with a deep, ready-made rockabilly voice and surefire guitar licks that consistently win over audiences.

Backed by the combination of Richard Marcos and Jerry Cavanaugh, LaBeef knocked out a chunk of the unabridged Americana songbook. The selections were all over the board, and everything rang true: "Waltz Across Texas"; "These Boots Are Made for Walkin'"; "Poke Salad Annie"; "Blue Moon of Kentucky"; "Sing Me Back Home"; "Big River"; "Wipeout"; "When the Saints Go Marching In"; "Johnny B. Goode" and "Green Green Grass of Home" to name only some.

Yes, "These Boots Were Made for Walkin'" rocked the same as "Big River," all thanks to LaBeef, a mountain of a man at about six-and-a-half-feet tall whose bear-claw hands wrung beautiful, blazing stuff from his guitar.

Marcos and Cavanaugh switched between bass and drums, and Cavanaugh pulled the rare trick of playing harmonica leads while drumming."
